BVN. Bank Verification Number

Your single biometric identity across all Nigerian banks, one number that proves you’re you, everywhere you bank.

NIN. National Identification Number

Nigeria’s national identity number, used alongside BVN to verify who you are.

NIP. NIBSS Instant Payments

The rail Nigerian instant transfers run on, when money arrives in seconds, it came through NIP.

Safe-to-spend

What’s genuinely yours to use after bills, planned spending and savings reserves are protected. Qoyla’s core number.

MMF. Money Market Fund

A regulated fund that holds very safe, short-term assets, a common home for money you’ll need soon.

T-bill. Treasury bill

A short-term government IOU: you lend, they pay you back with interest at a set date.

Standing order

An instruction to your bank to pay a fixed amount on a schedule, rent and circles often run on these.

Esusu / Ajo

Traditional rotating savings: a group contributes regularly and members take turns receiving the pot.

OD. Overdraft

Spending below zero with your bank’s permission, a loan with its own fees, even when it feels invisible.

PIT. Personal Income Tax

Tax on what you earn, usually deducted by your employer as PAYE.

VAT. Value Added Tax

Tax included in the price of most things you buy. 7.5% in Nigeria.
